Ottawa, Canada - Canada stated it will start applying a 25% tariff on certain US auto Imports on Wednesday, responding to actions taken by the US President Donald Trump 's own taxes on cars and components imported into his country.

“Canada remains steadfast in its response to all unjustified and arbitrary tariffs,” stated Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne on Tuesday regarding the tariffs set to take effect just after midnight.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measures last week.

The tariffs imposed by Canada will affect all automobiles brought into the country from the U.S. that do not adhere to the current North American free trade agreement.

This pertains to automobiles and light-duty trucks constructed using fewer than 75% components sourced from North America—approximately 10% of all vehicles transported from the U.S. to Canada, which equates to around 67,000 vehicles each year.

"The government is steadfastly dedicated to having these U.S. tariffs eliminated at the earliest opportunity and will safeguard Canada’s workforce, enterprises, economic environment, and industries," Champagne stated.
