An 85-year-old man from Baker City passed away after a collision involving two vehicles occurred on Interstate 84 late Saturday evening.

The Oregon State Police stated that the accident took place around 10:52 p.m., close to milepost 345. Initial investigations indicated that John Carl Allyn’s Chevrolet Tahoe had halted in the slow lane for unspecified reasons when it was hit from behind by a westward-bound Volvo commercial truck with a trailer.

The 36-year-old driver of the Volvo was identified as Anatolii Gulei from Vancouver, Washington.

Allyn was airlifted by LifeFlight to a nearby medical facility, where he was subsequently declared deceased. Gulei apparently escaped injury during the incident.

The accident led to considerable disruption, affecting traffic on the road for approximately six hours. Authorities continue to investigate the reason behind the collision.
