HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - On May 7, A REAL ID will be mandatory. To boarding a domestic flight, if you lack this, you must present an alternative government-approved form of identification, such as a passport.

As reported by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, between October 2018 and March 2025, over 4.1 million residents of Virginia were granted REAL IDs.

We've observed significant interest in REAL IDs, leading us to broaden our services and provide more chances for individuals to obtain a Virginia REAL ID," stated Camila Barco, media liaison for the Virginia DMV. "In response to this increasing demand, the DMV has organized REAL ID Appointment-Only Events during which we prolong weekend operating hours at select customer service locations. These special events were held at the Tysons Corner, Hampton, and Virginia Beach Customer Service Centers.

Barco mentioned that besides allowing air travel, the REAL ID will also be necessary for accessing federal buildings and military installations.

Barco mentioned that the DMV advises individuals to begin their online application for a REAL ID, as this process will assist applicants in determining the necessary documentation they must bring to their DMV appointment.
